Analyses and compares a passage from Mary Wollstonecraft’s 18th century proto-feminist treatise A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792) to the opening of Jane Austen’s wonderful novel Sense and Sensibility, particularly the treatment of John Dashwood and Fanny Dashwood towards his sisters, Elinor Dashwood, Marianne Dashwood, and Margaret Dashwood (and Mrs Dashwood too).

Both Mary Wollstonecraft and Jane Austen were concerned with the contemporary social injustice of cultural primogeniture (where the eldest son inherits) and the mis-education of women, and how these led to the moral degradation of society (for both men and women), but explore them through different writing genres (Mary Wollstonecraft in a philosophical tract, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), and Jane Austen in a fictional novel, Sense and Sensibility (published 1811, first drafted c.1795)). The lecture also considers contextual literary and historical details, such as Robert Bage’s novel Hermsprong or Man As He is Not (1796) and the 18th century development of the term ‘equal rights’.
