We stayed at 'Hoshi Onsen Chojyukan', an isolated inn in the mountains not far from Mikuni Pass, on the border between Gunma and Niigata prefectures. Built 150 years ago, the inn has a retro atmosphere that is irresistible to fans of remote hot springs. The best part is the bathhouse, which has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest.
