WATARU KANAYA makes Japanese sweets based on Japanese paintings from the Kyoto art world. I am the 6th generation of Kyogashi Tsukasa "Masahiro Kanaya". The store's specialty is SHINSEI beans. It was invented in the Muromachi period, and is a confectionery that combines elegant sweetness with the flavor of green laver.
KANAYA graduated from an art university in Kyoto and is also a fan of contemporary art. His deep love of art led him to collaborate with the Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art.
The museum presents approximately 3,700 masterpieces in its collection, which are changed according to the seasons. In particular, the Japanese paintings of the Kyoto art world are substantial, and each time he picks up one notable work and creates a collaboration Japanese confectionery. Akiko Niwa's 'Toya' in spring, Shoen Uemura's 'Maitsuki' in summer, and Suisho Nishiyama's 'Kokangu' in autumn. And in winter, Kikuchi Keigetsu's "Minami Hateruma". When KANAYA met the work for the first time, she felt a sense of incongruity. Although it is an island in Okinawa, a river that should not exist is drawn. In fact, Minami Hateruma is a legendary island. There is also a record that the people of the Yaeyama Islands and Hateruma Islands, who once suffered from the oppressive rule of the Ryukyu Kingdom, risked their lives to cross over.
What kind of Japanese sweets will KANAYA create in the southern paradise envisioned by Keigetsu Kikuchi?
