Located in the rice paddies of the Izumi Plain in the northwestern part of Kagoshima Prefecture, it is known as "Japan's largest crane migration grounds" where more than 10,000 cranes overwinter from mid-October to March every year, and is designated as a "Special Natural Monument" by the government.
The largest number of cranes migrate here to overwinter from December to January, and the sight of all the cranes taking off at once in the early morning is a sight to behold.
Wakimoto Beach (Akune City) is located about 10 km west of the crane migration site, and is one of the best beaches in Kagoshima Prefecture, selected as one of the "100 best beaches for swimming".
The shallow sandy beach stretches for 3 km, with a scenic view of an island off the coast, and marine sports such as surfing are popular in summer.
Nagashima is a 15km-long island northwest of Akune City, accessible by car from the Kyushu mainland via the Kuro-no-Seto Bridge.
Hario Park is an observatory park near the northernmost tip of Nagashima Island, and the view of the beautiful many islands below is called "Satsuma Matsushima," and offers a panoramic view of Ikarajima, Shourajima, Shishjima, and the Amakusa Islands.
The Yatsushiro Sea lies in the eastern part of Nagashima, and along the "Gurutto Flower Road" that runs through the eastern part of Nagashima, there is a parking lot and a park with a view of the Yatsushiro Sea, making it a great place to watch the sunrise throughout the year.
