Cassiopeia is a special express train operated by East Japan Railway Company, Iwate Galaxy Railway, Aoimori Railway, and Hokkaido Railway between Ueno Station and Sapporo Station. Cassiopeia began operation on July 16, 1999 (departing from Ueno) and July 17 (departing from Sapporo). All the cabins are single A sleepers for 2 people, and despite the fact that the special sleeper fare for this train is more expensive than other sleeper limited express trains, it was a very popular train. The name of the train comes from the constellation Cassiopeia. It is said that the reason for this is that it is a constellation that evokes the image of a night train, and that it is a constellation that shines in the northern sky all night long, paired with the North Star and the Big Dipper. With the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen, about 82 km including the Seikan Tunnel became a shared running section for Shinkansen and conventional lines, and the overhead line voltage was raised from 20,000 V AC for conventional lines to 25,000 V AC for Shinkansen. The sleeper limited express "Cassiopeia" ceased operation on March 19 (departing from Ueno) and March 20 (departing from Sapporo), 2016, and was officially abolished on March 26, 2016, the day the Shinkansen opened. The regular service of Cassiopeia has ended, but after that, "Cassiopeia Cruise" and "Cassiopeia Travel" are operated as group tour trains. #cassiopeia #sleepertrain #suite #luxurytrain #train #firstclass #japan #japantrain #japantravel
