In this 3 part video we feature the Mingus Mountain Scenic Byways, the mountain town of Jerome, and the Gold King Mine and Ghost town.
Mingus Mountain rises to over 7,800 feet, offering sweeping views of the Verde Valley, Sedona's red rocks, and the San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff. The drive passes through lush pine forests and high desert landscapes, creating a striking contrast in scenery. This route was historically used by miners traveling between Jerome and Prescott, adding a touch of history to the scenic beauty. Mingus Mountain is popular for hiking, camping, and hang gliding, with launch points for adventurous gliders. The area is home to diverse wildlife, including deer, elk, and a variety of bird species.
Jerome was once known as the "Wickedest Town in the West". Once a booming mining town, Jerome earned this nickname due to its rowdy saloons, gambling dens, and brothels during its heyday. At its peak in the early 20th century, Jerome's mines produced over a billion dollars' worth of copper. After the mines closed in the 1950s, Jerome nearly became a ghost town but was revived by artists and tourism in the 1960s. Built on a steep hill, parts of Jerome have literally slid downhill over the years due to unstable ground from mining. Many believe Jerome is haunted, with ghost stories tied to landmarks like the Jerome Grand Hotel, once a hospital.
The Gold King Mine was originally a working mine established in 1890. Today, it's a living museum showcasing old mining equipment and artifacts. Visitors can explore a collection of vintage vehicles, including classic cars, trucks, and even a sawmill. The site is home to quirky exhibits, like a 100-year-old wood-fired sawmill and an operational blacksmith shop. Unlike Jerome, which has been revitalized, Gold King Mine retains its authentic ghost town vibe, offering a glimpse into the rugged past. The mine shaft still exists, and visitors can learn about the gold and copper mining processes that once fueled the area’s economy.
