In the many stories of the early American frontier, few stand out as more brutal or bloody than that of Jim Bowie and The Sandbar fight. In a world where laws meant little, and personal honor meant everything, personal vendettas are often settled with gunpowder and lead in the form of one-on-one pistol duels. It was on a small island in the Mississippi River, where Jim Bowie had come to support his friend Dr. Thomas Maddox in a duel with his local rival. Bowie’s hated rival, Major Norris Wright, was attending in support of the opposite side. However, after the duel peacefully ends in a gentleman’s handshake, a misunderstanding between the parties leads to weapons being drawn again. This time, two men- including Jim Bowie- are shot. Within 90 seconds of these first shots being fired, Jim Bowie would incur multiple wounds via bullets and cane swords, grievously wound one man with his massive knife, and- most famously- viciously dispatch his hated rival Norris Wright in what will become one of the most legendary instances in the history of the Old West. Do not miss this very special- and very bloody- episode in which HOKC delves into the early life of one of the frontier’s most well-known and controversial figures, and the day that started his legend.
