Poetry analysis of John Keats’ 1819 poems ‘Bright Star’, ‘Ode on a Grecian Urn’, & ‘Ode on Melancholy’. Analysing John Keats’s poetic paradoxes central to his poetry of 1819 (embracing both the cold eternal & warm human passion, life & death, delight & melancholy) focussing on his ‘Bright Star’ sonnet, & drawing on John Keats’s poems ‘Ode on a Grecian Urn’ and ‘Ode on Melancholy’ (two of his Great Odes of 1819). The discursive video: • Outlines the literary background of the poem “Bright star, would I were stedfast as thou art”—the image of the star watching “earth’s human shores” from a distance. Considers a letter by John Keats to Tom Keats (June 1818), William Wordsworth’s poem ‘The Excursion’ (1814), & the Romantic poetic sublime. • Analyses the poems ‘Bright Star’, ‘Ode on a Grecian Urn’ & ‘Ode on Melancholy’ to highlight a central paradox within John Keats’ thinking—trying to reconcile the cold eternal & the warm human. • Examines the Keatsian idea of—oxymoronically—experiencing simultaneously two seemingly contradictory states (life & death, pleasure & melancholy). • Very briefly looks at the poem’s form—its mixture of Petrarchan & Shakespearean sonnet form. • Close reads the poem ‘Bright Star’.
