DENJIRO: Have you ever heard of the "shepherd's leap"? It's a traditional Spanish technique that involves jumping from up high and landing safely using just a long stick. I went outside and gave it a try, so check it out. Now, let me show you exactly how I did this.
I made a platform that's 2.5 meters high. If you were to simply jump off of this, you'd probably hurt yourself. But I'm going to jump using this stick that's four meters long. Here I go!
Firmly gripping the stick increases fiction. I was able to land safely because I fell at a slower speed than jumping down without using anything. It's important to keep your body close to the stick so that it doesn't bend. Only the tip of the stick is touching the ground. You'd think that putting your entire weight on it would make it topple over.
Let me explain using this model here. The stick is going through a weight with a hole in it. Think of this weight as the person jumping. The part coming out of the top of the weight represents the person's hand. Since it's touching the stick, friction is born, causing the weight to fall slowly. Let me bring the weight up to the top and drop it.
As you saw, the weight dropped to the bottom before the stick fell over. It takes some time for the stick to fall over, and that's why you're able to safely jump down to the ground.
