Kawasaki was a latecomer to the 2-stroke engine-mounted racer model replica bike boom that swept the motorcycle market in the 1980s. Kawasaki created a bike with an engine layout closely based on that of the KR350 and KR250 racers that had dominated the World Grand Prix 1978 season. This development effort led to a racing replica with top class performance featuring a unique straight 2-cylinder "tandem twin" engine mounted in an aluminum frame and fitted with RRIS (Rotary and Reed valve Intake System) air intake. The resulting model, the racer replica KR250, first appeared in 1984.
Kawasaki merupakan pemain baru di segmen mesin 2 tak motor replika balap yang membanjiri pasar roda dua di tahun 1980an. Kawasaki mendesain motor dengan susunan mesin menyerupai KR350 dan KR250 yang telah mendominasi kejuaraan World Grand Prix tahun 1978.
