As a quarterback I know a lot of systems out there don't teach reading coverages anymore. But the great quarterbacks when you think of the best of all time, guys like Tom Brady Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Joe Montana, John Elway all knew how to read defense. They understood what defenses were trying to do to them. In order to complete more passes, you can anticipate where you're going with throws. I know a lot of the air raid system stuff. They don't teach you to read coverage. And they just use general rules. But understanding coverage and what teams are trying to do to you is important. So today, we're going to go over cover six, I have a bunch of videos, that detail coverage and I'll put some cards in this video so that you can find those coverages and so that you can understand the game better as a quarterback. By understanding what they're doing, you can eliminate receivers, you can focus on receivers, and you can anticipate your throws but right now, let's get in to cover six. So I was playing in college when this coverage really came into full use, and it was just kicking off but a couple of teams were using it, UCLA used it, Miami used it. And we played both those teams in my junior year. In the NFL, it was just coming into vogue as well. And so it didn't have the proper name. Nobody knew what to call it yet. We called it cover 20 when I was at Cal because it was a version of cover 2. In the NFL. A lot of your coverages with the zero on the end are nickel coverages, so that didn't work out. When I was playing a Tampa, they call it Cowboy coverage because the Dallas Cowboys played it alot, but very smart people have settled on the name of cover six. And the reason for that is there is a cover 2 side and a cover 4 side. That adds up to cover You're not likely to see a ton of cover six in high school because there's so many rules on defense and not enough time to coach it. But if you ever do, now you understand it better. Knowing how to read coverage is really important as a quarterback. Take it from a guy who played 11 years of pro ball and who is a college football analyst now, quarterbacks who know how to read coverage who know how to read defense are much better players in terms of anticipation. If you liked what I did, please subscribe to the channel ring the bell. That way you'll get notified every time we have new stuff coming out. Give me a thumbs up if you understand cover six better at this point and give me a comment if you have any questions about cover six happy to answer them. I appreciate you watching. Let your family know that there's some football out there in spite of the fact that they've canceled high school football for the fall through California.
