KOMOREBI / Toshio Mashima Marimba Ⅰ:Tomohiro Nishikubo Marimba Ⅱ:Makoto Nakura Widely known as a giant for big wind ensemble works, Toshio Mashima (1949-2016) reveals his intimate self on “Komorebi for two marimbas (2011)”. The title, which elegantly expresses the gentle sunlight seeping out from trees and leaves, suggests a mother’s love towards her son on this piece. It was commissioned by a marimbist, Rie Sato, who had been a good friend of the composer for over 40 years and who premiered it with her son. As a self-proclaimed Francophile, the composer shows stylish writing in the second movement “Mimosa” which evokes southern France, while the two outer movements (I. Keyaki and III. Nire, both ubiquitous trees in Japan) carry strong nostalgic feelings. The beautiful memories of his childhood were eternally engraved on this tuneful duo before his passing in 2016.
