The Mahakumbh rotates among four holy sites in India: Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad) Haridwar Ujjain and Nashik. In 2025 the Mahakumbh was held in Prayagraj. The timing of the Mahakumbh is determined by astrological calculations.
The Maha in Mahakumbh signifies that it is the greatest of the Kumbh Melas happening after 12 Purna Kumbh Melas or every 144 years. However there has been discussion regarding the accuracy of that 144 year number. The Mahakumbh attracts an immense number of pilgrims often exceeding tens of millions. The 2025 Mahakumbh in Prayagraj lasted for 45 days. It concluded with the holy bath of Mahashivratri. It was reported that over 660 million people attended the 2025 Mahakumbh. After the Mahakumbh concluded there was a 15 day long sanitation project to clean the Sangam area.
