Arashi Kanjūrō’s Kurama Tengu doesn’t himself slap the vengeful woman in this clip, from the 1940 Kurama Tengu kaijō zokuhen, but certainly appears to condone this harsh, contemptuous treatment of her. Misogyny is a thread running throughout the Kurama Tengu film series, with the notable exception of Itō Daisuke’s 1942 film.
