Setsubun is the day on February 3rd when Japanese drive away bad luck and welcome in happiness. At temples and shrines all kinds of activities take place. At Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto, kyogen and geisha dancing are performed. Kyogen is traditional comic theater that came about at the same time as Noh in the 14th-15th Century. Kyogen plays were often performed between Noh acts to provide a little comic relief to the more serious Noh dramas. After the Kyogen performance, Maiko (geisha apprentices) and Geisha danced separately then together before doing mame-maki - bean tossing to the crowds.
