A big autumn festival to give thanks for a bountiful harvest. "Zuiki Mikoshi" decorated with vegetables parades lively
A festival held at the forefront of autumn festivals in Kyoto. It is said that during the Heian period, the enshrined deity, Sugawara no Michizane, carved a wooden statue by himself in Dazaifu, Kyushu, and the gods of Nishinokyo brought it back to Kyoto and enshrined it. The roofs of the two large and small portable shrines are all made of zuiki (taro stems), and can be seen at the Nishinokyo Otabisho (Nishinokyomikoshiokacho, Nakagyo Ward) during the festival period (1st to 4th). When the mikoshi parade through Kamishichiken, a geisha quarter in Monzen-cho, you can also see geisha and maiko watching.
The "Zuiki Festival" was held for the first time in 3 years with maiko (apprentice geisha) at Kamishichiken.
