Sir Keir Starmer defended the Government's inheritance tax changes on farms, citing a BBC report that said only 462 of the UK’s 209,000 farms in 2021-22 exceeded the new £1 million threshold for agricultural property relief (APR).
However, figures from the Country Land and Business Association's estimate that 70,000 farms would be affected.
Starmer said that most farms would remain unaffected and dismissed claims by Jeremy Clarkson, who argued that 96% of farms would face the tax. Speaking to protesters in Westminster, Clarkson criticised the BBC for supporting Labour’s stance, while BBC presenter Victoria Derbyshire challenged him in an interview, suggesting his farm purchase might be to avoid tax.
