Timanfaya National Park, located in Lanzarote, Canary Islands, is an expanse of volcanic landscapes that showcase the island’s unique geological history. Known for its surreal terrain, lava fields and volcanic craters, this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is a must-see destination for travelers seeking both natural beauty and scientific wonder.
This National Park spans approximately 51 square kilometers in the southwestern part of Lanzarote. The area was formed during intense volcanic eruptions that occurred between 1730 and 1736, with a smaller eruption in 1824. These eruptions reshaped the landscape, covering a third of the island in lava and ash. Today, the park is home to over 25 craters and a vast lava field, offering a vivid example of the island’s volcanic origins.
The park’s centerpiece, the Montañas del Fuego (Mountains of Fire), remains geothermally active. Just a few meters beneath the surface, temperatures can reach up to 600°C (1,112°F), a reminder of the volcanic activity that once shaped this terrain.
