During the production of Laravel Origins, we asked Zuzana Kunckova about the story behind Larabelles and discussed the importance and meaning of diversity and inclusivity within the Laravel community with a number of cast members, including Jess Archer, Diana Scharf, Matt Stauffer and @LaravelPHP creator, Taylor Otwell.
Following in the footsteps of other diversity supporting groups in the tech space like Django Girls and React Robins, Larabelles was created back in 2020 by Zuzana Kunckova in an effort to make the world of Laravel development more accessible to women, non-binary and trans developers.
And while the announcement of Larabelles was primarily met with widespread support, not everyone in the wider Laravel community was excited about the idea of there being, what they called, a "women-only group".
Between suggestions from white men that women are making a big fuss out of nothing and accusations from others that there was no need to "break up a perfectly good community", Zuzana has pushed forward with the Larabelles movement and hit milestone after milestone.
In this video, Zuzana Kunckova talks about the story behind the creation of Larabelles, while other cast members comment on what Larabelles has brought to the Laravel community as well as the general importance of community-specific groups within the programming world.
