A unique pedestrian-only level crossing located beside Sherburn-in-Elmet Station to the East of Leeds and within North Yorkshire. Originally commissioned in 1972, it got bypassed in the 1990's and was thereon retained for step-free station access. Until 2013, all four pedestals and barriers remained operational, but it was during this year that two were taken out of the crossing and the remaining two cut down to only cover the pedestrian walkway, but the logic remained the same as if it still had four barriers, and it left one barrier lowering after the other rather than the two dropping at the same time. The remaining pedestals would be un-changed, still being the original Drive-Up / Drive-Down Electromechanical 'GWE' pedestals.

All four wigwags from the original set-up survived right until the end, two of which mostly useless, but still in situ and providing as clear warning as ever. One alarm remained significantly louder than the other, with the oldest alarm being from the 1980s and quite an early example of the present variant. A yet more unique feature of this crossing is that it remained the final ever mainline crossing with white borders on the wigwags, something seldom seen after the red/white borders were mandated in the 1990's. It's remarkable enough that full road 'wigwags' were kept so long after it ceased to be used by road traffic.

An hour's worth of videos features here, and as the title suggests, these would be taken within just 12 hours or so of this retro equipment being decommissioned after 53 years of service thereabouts, a long service life with remarkably little change and alteration. LED pedestrian lights can be seen standing awaiting commissioning, and these will be used when the fully renewed crossing is complete and opened. Even with this renewal, the crossing (at least looks) to remain just as unique and unusual from what I've seen already! I hope you enjoy these final pre-renewal videos from here, a bonus being the crossing seen re-activating a mere six seconds after being raised for a previous train!
