Game Room O Scale Display Layout Update - Electrical Improvements and LED Lighting Lionel O scale trains have been around for decades. Dan's grandfather had a large Lionel toy train collection, and Dan's dad had a train as well. When it came time to design a display layout for Dan & Nichole's game room, they decided it would be fun to use 3 rail O scale. The train is up on a shelf near the ceiling. The track plan is a simple squared-off oval around the walls. There are no turnouts or anything fancy. The layout is complete, but there is always room for improvement. Though Dan originally installed two Lionel FasTrack terminal sections, he only wired one. After running the train for a while, Dan & Nichole noticed that it would slow down on the side of the room opposite the active terminal track. In this update, Dan shows how he used some low voltage landscaping cable to wire up the second terminal section. The improvement is noticeable. Now the train doesn't slow down on the far side of the room. Dan also shows a simple method for cleaning track that could be used in any scale. Finally, Dan installs color changing LED light strips on the shelf behind the track. Dan found the LED light strips on Amazon. They are controllable with the included remote or with a phone app. Using the phone app gets the most out of the light strips, including several automated color changing sequences. These lights are pretty cool. They're also peel-and-stick, so they were easy to install. Though this is an O scale layout, the techniques used could be used for an around-the-ceiling display layout in just about any scale.
