Take your winter hat to the next level with a fabulous fleece flower pin. Use bits of leftover fabric to make a matching fleece flower and use bits of faux fur for embellishment. It is fun and easy to make.
In this lesson I use 16 circles of fleece. Eight circles are cut from my hat main fabric and eight are contrast pieces in black. I use one from each pile to create 8 sets of petals. My circles are 1 3/4 inches or 4 cm in diameter. The finished flower is just under 4 inches or 10 cm in diameter.
We have a template on our website that you can download for free for flowers and circles. The circles are about 4.5 cm which gives you a bit more room to cut. You can trim away the edge that become part of the center circle if you feel they are bit too large.
The template is available here ... called flower and circle template for fleece flowers.

Hats are generally 4 inches or 10 cm deep so keep that in mind when designing your own flower. You can make the flower smaller in diameter by using 7 sets of petals or by cutting smaller circles. This size is lovely however and makes a statement in an elegant. It is a good use of leftovers is you are sewing hats for a business. The pin will add lots more value to your finished hat.
I use stiffened craft felt to make my own pin backs and a simple nickel plated safety pin for the fastening. I find the safety pin works well, bringing the finished pin close to the hat body so you can't see the pin from any angle. A pin that is mounted on a bar stands out a bit too much usually but would work for setting into a faux fur hat. My pins are considered to be Size 1, 28mm or 1 1/10 inch in length. SIze 2 pins, about 1.5 inches long or 38 mm, which will work great as well.
When I say stiffened felt, it can be under the brand ECO felt. Make sure you use the stiff version for best results. You can buy the circles pre cut on Amazon sites around the world. This is my affiliate Amazon link for 2" round black felt circles on Amazon - https://geni.us/O8c9mbN
I use faux fur that has strands about 1 inch or 2.5 cm long or a bit longer. It should just be a wintery nest for your button and not overwhelm the rest of your flower.
