Paul Louw served with 1 SAI and 61 Mech as a platoon commander. His Ratel IFVs attacked an enemy base called "Smokeshell" during Ops Sceptic on 10 July 1980. Three vehicles were shot out almost immediately and a running battle for survival started. One of his men, Gareth Rutherford, won the Honoris Crux as an ops medic in the next few hours (see SADF playlist for Gareth). Paul, as the local commander, tells his side of the story to us in a way that is both fascinating and endearing. If you have questions for Col Louw, please leave them below.
