MTV decided in 2008 to search for “Legally Blonde: The Musical’s” new star after the original “Elle Woods” (Laura Bell Bundy) handed in her notice. The musical-theatre race is on, as the girls sing, dance and act their hearts out, all with a focus on embodying Elle Woods. Who, in all things considered represents positivity, perseverance, and fighting stereotypes, all whilst staying true to yourself… Well, MTV certainly didn’t get that memo; and in a plight to make engaging reality tv, they sacrificed the heart and soul of what Elle Woods represents into the machine. We take a look at the context, the show and how MTV did these girls wrong with a reality TV formula that didn’t quite match musical theatre.
