LEGENDARY MATCH | JAPAN vs KOREA | Women’s Volleyball World Cup 2019. The Korean women's national volleyball team defeated its archrival Japan and recorded its first win in the World Cup.
Korea (ranked 9th in the world), led by coach Stefano Lavarini, won 3-1 (23-25 24-19 25-22 27-25) against Japan (ranked 6th) in the third match of the 2019 International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) World Cup held at Yokohama Arena in Japan on the 16th.
Korea lost to China 0-3 in the first match of this tournament and to the Dominican Republic 1-3 in the second match, suffering two consecutive losses, but turned things around by defeating the host country Japan.
The national team went all-out against Japan. All of their key players were selected, including left-handers Kim Yeon-koung (Eczacibasi, Turkey), Lee Jae-young (Heungkuk Life Insurance), right-handers Kim Hee-jin (IBK Industrial Bank), center Kim Su-ji (IBK Industrial Bank), Yang Hyo-jin (Hyundai Construction), and setter Lee Da-young (Hyundai Construction).
The game was fiercely contested. Korea struggled against the opposing team's well-organized attacks, but continued the close match with center Kim Su-ji's blocking.
The first set was decided by a difference in concentration.
Korea fell behind 20-22 after allowing three consecutive points with Kim Su-ji's attacking error, Lee Jae-young's serve receive error, and the opponent's serve ace at 20-19.
At 21-22, Kim Su-ji committed a serve error, and at 22-23, Lee Da-young's serve went out.
Korea easily gave up the hard-earned points and finished the first set 23-25.
Korea did not repeat the same mistake in the second set. They did not lose focus in the close match at the end of the set.
It was Kim Yeon-koung who set the mood. She scored a precious point with a powerful spike from high point at 17-15.
Korea then maintained a 2-3 point gap until they scored four consecutive points at 21-19 to level the set at 1-1.
Kim Yeon-koung was also defeated in the third set. Korea was leading 17-12, but allowed the score to fall to 19-17, and then maintained a narrow lead of 1-2 points.
At this point, Kim Yeon-koung stepped up. He took the score with a powerful back attack at 22-21, and then scored by breaking through the opponent's blocking wall at 23-22.
Kim Yeon-koung finished the third set by inducing a touch out at 24-22.
The fourth set was intense enough to keep your palms sweating. Korea seemed to be on the verge of an easy win, with Lee Jae-young's three consecutive attacks making it 24-19 at 21-19.
However, they were later pushed back by Japan, which showed strong stamina.
At 24-22, the game appeared to end with the opposing team's attack being out, but the decision was overturned after a video review.
Korea then gave up three consecutive points to fall behind 24-25, but then Da-young Lee scored a precious blocking point to make it deuce again.
And after much difficulty, they achieved victory thanks to Lee Jae-young's attack and Kim Hee-jin's serve ace.
On this day, Korea showed an overwhelming performance with a blocking score of 17-3.
Lee Jae-young scored 26 points, the most for either team. Kim Yeon-koung scored 22 points. Kim Su-ji scored 11 points, including six blocks.
