I’m sure we all know how a regular electric motor works. But in today’s video, let’s explore another method of making an electric ‘motor’: Let’s build an electric engine using Lego! Instead of gasoline being burned to create hot expanding gas to drive the piston, we’re going to replace the head of the piston with a magnet. And instead of gasoline, we’re going to use a coil of wire to serve as an electromagnet!
I’ve always found solenoid engines fascinating. They’re not very efficient (electric motors are designed to rotate for a reason), but I just love the mechanical principle in action. Watching the whirr of pistons pumping and driving a crank. So let’s explore this concept my building a bunch of Lego electric piston engines.
