Team Korea had won Men's Team Sabre Gold at the 2012 London Olympics, and Silver at the 2014 Kazan World Championships. However, in the seasons of 2015 and 2016, Korea would lose in the quarter finals to France and Russia respectively. At the 2016 Rio World Championships, Oh Sanguk and Kim Junho fenced their first season on the team event and their first World Championships - they were unready. Korea had a large lead before Oh Sanguk lost it to Ibragimov. Korea then fought back the lead until Kim Junho lost it to Danilenko in the 8th. Now in the season of 2016-17, Oh Sanguk has been selected as anchor for the first time. Korea had never won the Men's Sabre Team event at World Championships at this point.

Team Hungary has not won the Men's Sabre Team event at World Championships since 2007 - Szilagyi's first season on the team. Hungary won Bronze at 2014 Kazan World Championships and Silver at the 2016 Rio World Championships. Andras Szatmari had won the individual event a few days prior by beating Gu Bongil in the final.

The last time that we had 1080p footage of the World Championships Final was in 2018.
