Nested designs include hierarchical sampling for the purpose of allowing inferences about means of a group when the dependent variable is being measured on a unit more than one level below the group. This hierarchically structured sampling makes it possible to partition sources of random variation, but also provide an appropriate error term for the main effect of interest.
