Lessons learned managing the hemlock woolly adelgid
Eastern hemlock are being threatened by an invasive insect, the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), throughout its native range in eastern North America. Since its introduction near Richmond, VA in the early 1900’s, HWA has spread throughout the southern range of eastern hemlock in the United States killing untold millions of trees. Range expansion northward has been slower, presumably because of cold winters, but is now making it’s way north into Nova Scotia and Ontario as well as westward into Michigan. This webinar will briefly describe the biology of HWA and discuss the lessons learned in the south and how they apply to HWA range expansion in the north.
