Nick Romano (James Darren) grows up in a struggling tenement on Chicago's south side with his loving but drug-addicted mother, Nellie (Shelley Winters). Nellie dreams of a better future for Nick and pushes him to develop his talent for playing the piano. Their neighbors, including an alcoholic ex-lawyer (Burl Ives) who harbors unspoken feelings for Nellie, rally around her to keep Nick away from the influence of Louie, a local drug dealer. However, a fateful encounter between Nick and Louie threatens to upend their efforts and change Nick's life forever.
