When New York City cabbie Brick Tennant (Henry Fonda) is mistakenly identified as a murderer by a confused eyewitness, he is convicted and sentenced to death for a crime he didn’t commit. Despite his desperate protests of innocence, no one believes him—except his devoted fiancée, Mary (Maureen O’Sullivan). Certain of Brick’s innocence because she was with him at the time of the murder, Mary takes matters into her own hands.
