Sardar Sham Singh Atariwala: A Brief Life History Early Life: The Legendary General of Sikh Kingdom Sham Singh Attariwala
Born in the 1790s in Attari, Amritsar, Punjab.
Received education in Gurmukhi and Persian.
Belonged to a well-known family.
Military Career:
Joined the Sikh Khalsa army in 1817.
Known for his bravery and leadership skills.
Appointed as "Jathedar" (commander) of 5,000 horsemen by Maharaja Ranjit Singh.
Participated in numerous campaigns:
Multan conquest (1818)
Kashmir conquest (1819)
Afghan-Sikh Wars (1823-1839)
Frontier Province expeditions
Later Life:
Became a member of the regency council after Maharaja Ranjit Singh's death (1839).
Fought alongside the Sikh forces in the Anglo-Sikh Wars (1845-1846).
Known for his heroic last stand at the Battle of Sobraon (1846), where he died fighting.
Legacy:
Remembered as a courageous general and loyal soldier of the Sikh Empire.
His life exemplifies the values of valor and sacrifice.
A trust established in his name continues his legacy through social and cultural initiatives.
Additional Notes:
His daughter, Nanaki Kaur, married Prince Naunihal Singh and became Maharani of the Sikh Empire.
