This time I interview another family in the Lot region of South West France and ask them the good, bad and the ugly of moving to France and how they are coping.

The family of three, affectionately calling themselves a “throuple,” consist of Mom Maggie, daughter Tina, and Tina’s husband Ted. Together, they’ve created a charming life in a small village known for its vibrant community, a quaint market, and of course, the beloved local bar.

Our conversation dives into what makes their life in rural France so special. The village might be small, with just a church and a gas station, but it thrives with a community spirit centered around the French-style bar run by the charismatic Jean-Pierre and Cristelle. It’s a place where locals gather after market day to enjoy drinks, laughter, and a sense of belonging. The atmosphere is inviting, warm, and very French – not just a hub for expats.

Throughout our chat, we explore what drew this family to settle here after 22 years of living in France. They share stories about moving from their former home near Carcassonne, running a holiday business in the Montagne Noire, and ultimately finding the perfect house to accommodate their needs in this quiet yet lively area. It’s all about balance – downsizing while gaining access to a community filled with events, night markets, and neighborly kindness.

The village’s night markets are a highlight, where people of all ages come together at long communal tables to enjoy local food, wine, and music. It’s a snapshot of simpler, more connected living – reminiscent of the way things were in the UK decades ago. Imagine sharing a meal with strangers who quickly become friends, all under the stars, with no concerns about trouble or bureaucracy holding people back from celebrating life.

However, it’s not all idyllic perfection. We also discuss the challenges of living in a foreign country, especially when it comes to language barriers and navigating French bureaucracy. For Maggie, the hardest part is making phone calls in French – something many expats can relate to. Despite these obstacles, she praises the healthcare system and the kindness of the locals who have made her feel at home. The family has also found that, as long as they make an effort with the language, the French community is incredibly welcoming and supportive.

We reflect on how politeness, warmth, and neighborly manners are deeply embedded in the culture here. Simple gestures like a “bonjour” go a long way, and people greet each other warmly in places like the doctor’s office or at social events. It’s a refreshing contrast to the reserved atmosphere you might find in certain parts of the UK.

As the conversation winds down, we touch on the topic of aging abroad. Some people worry about being far from family as they get older, but Maggie, Tina, and Ted have built a support network that gives them peace of mind. With family visiting regularly and a close-knit community nearby, they feel secure and happy in their adopted home.

Finally, there’s a lighthearted discussion about the unique quirks of rural life in France – from tractors blocking roads during peaceful protests to impromptu village parties where everyone joins in. It’s clear that this family has found their rhythm and happiness in the Lot region. They have no plans to return to England, embracing the slower, more fulfilling pace of life here.

This interview is filled with reflections, laughter, and insights into what it’s truly like to live in the French countryside. Whether you’re considering moving to France or simply curious about expat life, there’s a lot to take away from this candid chat.
