A father's sacrifice for his son. This sums up the second half of the movie. Guido did his best to protect Joshua, not just from harm, but also from the grim reality of the concentration camp.
I believe the way he maintained his positivity is similar to what some people did to survive the camps during WWII (and also to protect their sanity).
Guido is a great father and husband. But I have to say that I do not condone his actions of casually lying, stealing (the hat), and using others' properties without permission (the red pillow and red carpet). Of course, this is just a comedy movie, after all. So there were barely any consequences, and they did try to keep it light and funny.
