What makes Terrence Malick's films Heideggerian? Thematically Malick goes against Rationality and Modernity in his films, as Heidegger does in his philosophy. Formally Malick's camera and the characters in his films can’t stay still, as they anxiously anticipate discovering something. This is similar to what Heidegger calls the moment of vision, in his book, 'Being and Time.' The past in Malick’s films is always sedimented in the present rather than leading the audience to the truth via narration, argumentation, and plot structure. Nor does it hold the truth which is revealed to the audience through confessions and historical investigations. This means that in order to discover the truth, the characters in his films have to open themselves to others and the world once again.
