Welcome to The Hi Fi Mechanik a new Youtube channel dedicated to premium analogue, vinyl record players, primarily the iconic Linn Sondek LP12.
My background in the hi-fi industry started from the late 70’s, being responsible for setting up and installing Linn Sondek LP12s for premier dealerships in Liverpool and London. I’ve visited the Linn factories around a dozen times for training.
Although there are many videos for LP12 set-up on Youtube, I feel there is space for a comprehensive guide on buying LP12s on the second hand market and provide an extremely detailed guide for total strip down and rebuild and more importantly how to make it ‘sing’ unfortunately, many videos don’t cover the minor areas which when combined, make a dramatic sound improvement, I’m a bit dyslexic and rather pedantic, taking fine detail to the max, perhaps that’s why my decks sounded better!
Please understand that this particular deck is not set up correctly at this stage and over the course of upcoming videos we shall be stripping down and rebuilding this recently bought second hand LP12 many times with various upgrades.
In this, our first video we are simply showing you where to place your finger and how to ‘bounce’ the deck to determine what, if any, adjustments are required.
The deck should be level, so too should be the platter and arm board. It is best to use very lightweight levels on the arm board & platter as a heavy level gives a false reading.
During the bounce we are looking for a consistent vertical (pistonic) movement, there should be no twisting motion of the arm board, no noise and all 3 springs should move freely together. In addition the arm board should be level with the plinth and have an equal gap.
We shall be going into far greater detail in future advanced videos on how we setup the suspension with procedures to ensure every component is correct, which in turn reduces the set-up time and most importantly resulting in ‘the best sound quality’.
