In this episode we run through the very popular modification to the Bed Flys commonly used on Jayco and other similar camper trailers. We also show a few of our own ideas to make it even better and more reliable in windy situations.
Why do you do it? To save time so you can setup and pack away fast, plus it also alleviates all the pegs and ropes associate with the standard bag awnings. PLEASE NOTE - 8mm bolts and hardware are used as listed below.
This is a very easy modification to do and only takes a few hours. Superpeg now make kits or we provide below a list of the parts we used to make the conversion.
This list is enough to do both bed fly ends:
6 x 25.4mm Nylon inserts (Superpeg #792). 4 go on the base of each corner pole which is run diagonally. The remaining 2 go on the larger end of the spreader/cross bar (previously the center pole).
2 x 22mm Nylon inserts (Superpeg #791A) - these go on the smaller end of the spreader/cross bar - on the end where you remove 150mm for the peak support.
2 x 22mm Nylon C-Clip(Superpeg #760A) - these go onto the 150mm piece you cut off and provides the connection between the spreader/cross bar and standard ridge support pole.
Outback Bumper - Bimini mount:
2 x BLA Bimini Canopy Deck mounts - these go onto rear bumper instead of bird peak. Seems BCF no longer stock however BLA part is #9114898
Outback Bumper - Bird Peak Mount Option:
Alternatively use 2 x (Superpeg #773B) and 2 x (Superpeg #775B) - these are the bird peak end and receiving plate. In this instance you only need 4 off the Superpeg #792.
Tourer Rear:
Don't order either of the bumper options and look to do the same method as front. In this case stay with the 6 x Superpeg #792 but make sure you grab additional M6 Bolts, nyloc nuts and wing nuts as listed below.
Hardware:
Below is the additional hardware you need to mount. PLEASE Note - use M8 not the M6 refereed to in the videos (sorry!!)
2 x 80 - 90mm long M8 bolts - these affix to the outer floor frame. You can even do 100mm bolts and shorten as required.
4 x M8 nyloc nuts - one secures the bolt to the frame. The other is a stop for the pole support.
2 x M8 wing nuts - these secure the diagonal pole support.
2 x 8mm Lynch Pins - for the rear mount securing if using our method with the Bimini Canopy Deck Mounts.
