The U.S. Senate is expected to vote on President Donald Trump's nomination of John Ratcliffe to be director of the CIA, and former Fox News host Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense. The votes will be preceded by debate on the floor.

President Trump criticised the European Union for its “bad taxes” on American technology companies in a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Trump dialled into the event to lash out at America’s trading partners, threatening tariffs on the EU and urging the Saudi government to cut oil prices.

“The EU treats us very badly, they have a large tax,” Trump told delegates. “A very substantial one, they don’t take our foreign products or cars, and they take our cars by the millions.”

He criticised Brussels’ demand that Apple pay up to €15 billion in back taxes to the Irish government. “We have very big complaints with the EU,” he said. The administration has passed an executive order threatening retaliation on countries who have agreed to impose a minimum corporate tax rate of 15 per cent on multinational companies, including the UK and the EU.
