Grid lines, Quantize, drawing notes which snap to specific timing values… sometimes it’s easy to feel as though our productions aren’t breathing from a timing perspective.

This week, we’re going to explore a range of means by which we can get notes off the grid, to inject a greater sense of groove and timing freedom and, in fact, to make things sound a little more musical. We’ll start with a beat loop programmed with the Pencil Tool and look at ways to unpick rigid timing. I’ll also record a Bass part and refuse to entertain the idea of Quantizing it (!), whilst we’ll also see that there are selective ways to ‘de-Quantize’ parts of a performance if we want to correct the timing of some notes and not others. We’ll also see how manual adjustments and the Nudge function can help.
