Born in humble surroundings on the banks of the River Wear in Sunderland, Jack Crawford would be raised to the status of a national hero; he would give the English language a new statement of loyalty, be rewarded by his King and applauded by the nation, yet once his moment had passed his life spiralled into poverty and oblivion.
