Born in humble surroundings on the banks of the River Wear in Sunderland, Jack Crawford would be raised to the status of a national hero; he would give the English language a new statement of loyalty, be rewarded by his King and applauded by the nation, yet once his moment had passed his life spiralled into poverty and oblivion. He was ultimately laid to rest in an anonymous grave in his home town just yards from where he grew up
