The Tale of the Dead Moon | An Olde Tale from the Fenlands 🌙
Long ago, before the Fenlands were drained, the Moon herself vanished, buried deep in the marshes, lost to darkness, swallowed by the creeping horrors that lurked in the bogs. Without her guiding light, evil things roamed freely: bogles, dead hands, and shadowy creatures that whispered the darkest fears of the lost.

This ancient folktale from the English Fenlands tells of a time when the Moon, troubled by the tales of nightmarish beings in the marshes, descended to see for herself, only to fall into a terrible trap. Bound by the black snag, she lays helpless as the darkness claims the land. With no moon to light their way, the Fenfolk live in terror, their nights ruled by shrieking creatures and creeping horrors…
But one fateful night, a traveler remembers that once, when he was lost in the bogs, he saw a faint glow in the bog, and wonders if it isn’t the Moon herself. Hearing this, the Fenfolk set out on a desperate quest to free the Moon from her watery grave…
📖 In this retelling, we explore:
- The eerie landscape of the ancient Fenlands
- The monstrous beings that lurked in the bogs on moonless nights
- The Moon’s descent into darkness, and how she was buried alive
- The Fenfolk’s daring rescue and attempt to free to Moon from her captivity
- The deeper symbolism of light vs. darkness in folklore
This story has been preserved as much as possible to its original form, as told by Marie Clothilde Balfour in 1891 in Folklore Vol.2 - Legends of the Carrs, adapted for Beasts of the Olde World today.
🌕 This Olde Tale captures the raw, unsettling power of English folklore: where light is fragile, and the dark things of the world are never far away...
