On November 17, 2012, José Salvador Alvarenga departed from the fishing village of Costa Azul, near Pijijiapan on the Chiapas coast of Mexico. An experienced sailor and fisherman, he planned a 30-hour deep-sea fishing expedition with 23-year-old Ezequiel Córdoba, an inexperienced fisherman he had never met before. After a day of fishing, they were caught in a storm. The rough weather damaged the motor and most of their portable electronics, and they had to dump the fish to stabilize the boat. Without sails, oars, an anchor, running lights, or a means to communicate, the boat began drifting across the open ocean. The storm also destroyed much of their fishing gear, leaving them with only a few basic supplies and minimal food.
