In the 1850’s improvements in steel making technology in Sheffield created the need for durable refractory materials to line the new furnaces. Ganister rock was the ideal material , as it was very high in Silica, and seams were found near Sheffield
Mining of Ganister Started from the mid 1800s - to the mid 1900s.

During the 1940’s the industry was vital to the war effort given its strategic importance to the manufacture of iron and steel. It has been said that if the Germans had bombed the Ganister mining area successfully , the war would have been over very quickly !
