The "Mad Elephant of Mandla" was a notorious killer rogue who operated in what is now Madhya Pradesh in central India, killing at least 40 human beings in grisly fashion in 1871-1872. According to the story, the elephant escaped captivity from Ellichpur (now Achalpur) in 1851, from the dominions of the princely state of Nagpur, sheltering in the nearby forest-clad hills before transitioning into a destructive state. Such was the notoriety achieved by this rogue, that it was mentioned by Rudyard Kipling in the second Jungle Book (1895).
