An area of interest (Invest 94S) has been persisting for over a week now, and is floating around in the southern Indian Ocean today with a new burst of convection. The plucky system is expected to speed up as it continues westwards and may finally develop as it reaches Madagascar late this week, or on the other side in the Mozambique Channel this weekend. Behind it, another area of interest could develop later in the week and some models, such as the GFS, are developing a major cyclone with impacts in eastern Madagascar. Another area of interest, still partly monsoonal, is located near Christmas Island, south of central Indonesia, and may briefly develop later in the week with tropical storm force winds, much like several other systems have done recently in the area. In the southern Pacific, two areas of interest along a line of storms could develop later this week, the first of which already starting to rotate near the northern islands of Tonga. These storms will parade southeastwards, and could cause very high amounts of rainfall for Fiji and Samoa, with maximums near 750mm. In the later part of the forecast, there may be a cyclonic threat to the Mascarene Islands, but the chances are currently low.
