In 1519, an expedition set sail from Seville that would forever change the history of humanity. Five ships, captained by the Portuguese Ferdinand Magellan, embarked on an ambitious mission: to find a new sea route to the Spice Islands (today's Moluccas) by sailing west across the Pacific Ocean. Among the crew was Juan Sebastián Elcano, who captained the ship that was the first to sail around the world.
The journey was long and full of challenges. The ships had to face storms, disease, shortages of provisions and mutinies. Despite the difficulties, the expedition made important discoveries. They sailed along the Atlantic coast of South America, discovered the Strait of Magellan (the sea passage between the Atlantic and the Pacific) and entered the Pacific Ocean.
Finally, after three years of travel, on September 6, 1522, the only remaining ship, the Nao Victoria, captained by Elcano, returned to Sanlúcar de Barrameda. The expedition had achieved the first circumnavigation of the globe, proving that the Earth was round.
