わが国の本州から四国、九州に分布しています。丘陵や山地に生え、他の樹木に巻きついてよじ登ります。蔓は右巻きです。葉は奇数羽状複葉で、長楕円形または狭卵形の小葉が１１～１９個つきます。４月から５月ごろ、大きな総状花序を下垂させて藤色の蝶形花を咲かせます。「やまふじ」とは異なり、上部から順に咲き下がります。別名で「のだふじ」とも呼ばれますが、これはかつて藤の名所であった野田村（大阪市福島区）に因むもの。
写真５１・中５２、中５９・中６０、中６１～中６４は、宮城県天然記念物「滝前不動のふじ」、根元周りは４．８メートルあります。
マメ科フジ属の落葉蔓性木本で、学名は Wisteria floribunda。英名は Japanese wisteria。
The Japanese wisteria (Wisteria floribunda) belongs to Fabaceae (the Peafamily). It is a deciduous woody vine that is native to Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu of Japan. This vine grows in hillsides to mountains and climbs up adjacent trees. It is right hand wind. The leaves are odd-pinnate compound with 11-19 of oblong or narrow-ovate leaflets. The long drooping racemes are borne and bloom violet papilionacenous flowers from April to May. It is defined by bursting out from top down of clusters. It is also called "Noda-fuji" in Japan, which is a reference to the village of Noda (Fukushima-ku, Osaka City), which was once famous for its wisteria.
