It is observed on the 14th night of the Krishna Paksha (waning moon phase) in the Hindu month of Phalguna (February–March). Devotees fast, chant Shiva mantras, offer bilva leaves, and stay awake all night in prayer and meditation. Significance of Maha Shivaratri Marriage of Shiva & Parvati – It is believed that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married on this night. Shiva's Tandava – According to mythology, Lord Shiva performed his divine dance, Tandava, on this night. The Night of Devotion & Salvation – It is said that worshipping Shiva on this night helps devotees overcome sins and attain moksha (liberation). Samudra Manthan Legend – During the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), Lord Shiva drank the deadly poison Halahala to save the universe, and Maha Shivaratri is celebrated in honor of this sacrifice. Rituals & Observances Fasting (Vrat) – Devotees observe a full-day fast, consuming only fruits and milk. Night-long Vigil (Jagran) – Staying awake and chanting "Om Namah Shivaya" throughout the night. Abhishekam (Ritual Bath of Shiva Lingam) – Offering milk, honey, water, curd, ghee, sugar, and bilva leaves to the Shiva Lingam. Visiting Shiva Temples – Special prayers and processions take place in Shiva temples. Maha Shivaratri is celebrated with great devotion, especially in Kashi (Varanasi), Ujjain, Somnath, Pashupatinath (Nepal), and Kedarnath.
