Mahmoud Khalil wife, lawyer reactions to Columbia student leader's detainment, attempted deportation

Supporters of Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil gathered outside the New York federal courthouse where U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman declined to release Khalil Wednesday.

Furman had ordered that Khalil should not be removed from the country for now and on Wednesday heard from Khalil’s attorneys, who had disputed the validity of his detention and planned to petition for his return.

Khalil is being held in a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Louisiana after the Department of Homeland Security arrested him on March 8. Homeland Security said immigration agents arrested him in support of Trump’s executive orders prohibiting antisemitism.

Khalil and other Columbia students protested Israel's siege of Gaza during its war against the Palestinian militant group Hamas after the 2023 attacks and kidnappings by Hamas militants in Israel.
