This is the sixth pipe I've made since taking up the hobby, and the first one that isn't a traditional briar burl pipe with a vulcanite stem. It is fashioned entirely out of maple (hard maple for the bowl and soft maple for the pipe), as maple is considered non-toxic, doesn't impart much flavor to the smoke, and is readily available in stock big enough to make this style pipe.
The glue I used is Titebond II, which is both waterproof and is certified non-toxic for "incidental contact with food." Since this is going in your mouth, that is better than being toxic like many other glues, or being non-toxic but water-soluble like white glue. It's also sandable and stainable, which is a big plus for this kind of design.
In order to clean the pipe, I will have to buy some extra fluffy pipe cleaner coils (ie, pipe cleaner that is not cut for length), which is available in 52' lengths from smokingpipes.com and other pipe supply retailers.
I'm not a professional woodworker, nor really even a seasoned veteran woodworker. I've just recently picked up pipemaking largely from watching YouTube videos on the subject. Most of the tools I use in the video are pretty low-end compared to what a pro has. So, this is the kind of think a rank amateur can make after just six weekends of a new hobby.
